Terry Crews is known for bringing the funny to all of the roles that span his almost 20 years in the business, but the comedian got serious this week and revealed how his addiction to porn almost destroyed his marriage.
In a video posted to his Facebook on Tuesday (Feb. 23), Crews detailed how his “dirty little secret” began when he was an adolescent growing up in Michigan. By the time he was 22, the actor married his wife, Rebecca, and said his fixation with pornography quickly started to ruin their union.
“It really, really messed up my life in a lot of ways. My wife was literally like, ‘I don’t know you anymore. I’m out of here,'” he said.
Eventually, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star said he realized that change was necessary and went to rehab in an effort to put an end to the addiction that was affecting his life.
“I had to change because I reazlied, ‘Yo, this thing is a major, major problem,'” Crews said. “I literally had to go to rehab for it. The thing that I found, by not telling people, it becomes more powerful, but when you tell, and when you put it out there in the open… it loses [its] power.”
Now, the former football player, who played five years in the NFL, said that he has made it his mission to help others who struggle with the same addiction. “If day turns into night and you are still watching [porn], you probably got a problem,” he said. “And that was me… Now it’s become my battle to help other people who are going through the same thing.”
