Subnautica 2 dev clarifies multiplayer and live service comments made by publisher

Update:
Subnautica 2 developer Unknown Worlds has now clarified comments about its upcoming game previously made by publisher Krafton.

In a blog post, Unknown Worlds says that in reference to Krafton saying Subanutica 2 will have a Games as a Service model, the developer simply plans to "continually update the game for many years to come, just like the previous two Subnautica games. Think our Early Access update model, expanded." There will be "No season passes. No battle passes. No subscription."

The developer added: "The game is not multiplayer-focused. Co-op will be an entirely optional way to play the game. You’ll be able to enjoy the game as a single-player."

Original story:
In its latest earnings report, Krafton has unveiled a few key snippets of info about the next Subnautica game. As revealed by the publisher, Subnautica 2 is a live-service multiplayer sequel.

Krafton describes Subnautica 2 as a "multiplayer sequel to the original IP" powered by Unreal Engine 5 that will let players "explore an oceanic world in stunning stylized graphics." The new game will also feature "single or 1-4 player co-op," a new alien planet to explore, and a "Game-as-a-Service model with enhanced replayability."

Both Subnautica and follow-up Subnautica: Below Zero are fantastic single-player survival games, and multiplayer could add an exciting new dimension of gameplay to the sequel.

The planned live-service model, though, will likely prove controversial. In fact, the news already appears to be going down like a sinking ship over on the Subnautica subreddit. Commenting on the news, Reddit user Jossokar said, "Well, unless they change this... it pains me to say this, but Subnautica may be as good as dead to me. Games as a Service only messes up everything." ComfortableJolly4787 added: "This is such an awful decision. Also, how does game as service even work in a single-player co-op game?"

In Krafton's last financial report, it was revealed that Subanautica 2 will be released during the first half of 2025.
