Netflix Says Marla's Sleek Bob In 'I Care A Lot' Wasn't Originally Blonde

August 2024 · 3 minute read

Marla Grayson sports one of the sleekest bobs to have ever graced the web TV screen. The amoral protagonist of I Care a Lot, however, wasn’t always supposed to be a glacial blonde.

The character played by English actress Rosamund Pike was originally intended to be a redhead. Netflix has revealed that initial screen tests for the character envisioned Marla having red hair.

Marla Grayson Was Supposed To Be A Redhead

“Fascinated by Marla Grayson’s evil lesbian blonde bob in I Care a Lot? Originally it was an evil lesbian RED bob,” Netflix LGBTQ+ Twitter account Most tweeted on March 9.

“Our initial thought was for Marla to be a redhead,” confirmed hair department lead Lori Guidroz, who first had Marla’s ginger ‘do mocked up in Photoshop.

The decision to go for a blonde hue was to give the character a more serious appearance.

“We decided to go with a clean, sharp bob, as we all felt it would be a better choice for Marla.” Guidroz added.

“I think her hairstyle reinforces the character's strength and also her seriousness. It is not compromising. It must be done right.”

But the sharp bob isn’t the only hairstyle Marla rocks in the movie by J Blakeson. At one point, Marla goes incognito to catch Russian mafia don Roman Lunyov (Peter Dinklage).

During her mission, the protagonist wears a short blonde wig and massive glasses. Guidroz also explained where that look came from.

“I prepped and cut several wigs in different colors and styles for the camera test. One of the wigs I cut was the really short blonde one, which we loved so much we decided to use it as her disguise,” the hair department lead said.

Marla And The Toot In Milk Scene In ‘I Care A Lot’

*Spoilers for I Care a Lot ahead*

Together with her fabulous, perfectly ironed suits, Marla’s bob has come to symbolize her mania for perfectionism. Another crucial scene in the movie gives viewers an insight into Marla’s controlling nature.

In an anxiety-inducing sequence, Lunyov kidnaps Marla and subsequently drugs her and puts her in a car crashing into a lake. The protagonist escapes the sinking car, but as she reemerges, she realizes one of her teeth is falling out as a consequence of being punched in the face.

Marla manages to keep it together. She pulls the tooth out, goes to the closest convenience store and finally places the tooth in a bottle of milk to preserve it.
