Cam’ron appears to have fully embraced his role as an elder statesman in Hip-Hop culture, as he has shown an increased willigness to draw from his own past experiences.

During a recent Instagram Live session, the 48-year-old took the time to reflect on his beefs with the likes of 50 Cent and Nas while contextualizing the ongoing disputes amongst rappers today.

Speaking on his brief feud with 50 — which stemmed from comments the Queens rapper made regarding Koch Records, the label multiple Dipset artists released music on during the mid-late ’00s — Cam describes the beef as more “entertaining” than volatile.

“When me and 50 Cent was going on, that shit was fun,” the Harlem native said of the spat, adding that he and the G-Unit leader eventually became cordial following the beef.

“Shout out to my ni**a 50, we good now, too. But when 50 dissed me, it started with an argument on the phone. 50 had said Koch [Entertainment] is the graveyard for a lot of rappers. At the time, Jim Jones had just went to Koch… and Jim Jones is Dipset.”

The Come Home With Me creator reveals that he and 50 never had genuine ill will towards one another, and even joked about the tension upon the hatchet getting buried. “All that sh*t to me was just music,” Cam said. “Even when 50 and me spoke, he was like, ‘Let’s get to this money.’ When we spoke, we laughed about that sh*t.”

Another artist the hitmaker had qualms with at one point was Nas, who critiqued Cam’ron’s lyrical skills during his own infamous interview on New York radio station Power 105.3 back in 2002.

While Cam and The Diplomats quickly shot back with a freestyle over Nas’ “Hate Me Now” instrumental shortly after, he admits that he was affected by Nas’ words, as he was a longtime fan of the rap star.

“When Nas dissed me, that sh*t hurt. I was like, ‘Damn,'” he recalled. “We grew up on Nas, man. ‘What did Nas diss us for? Damn this is crazy.’ So when he dissed me for no reason, I’m like, ‘Damn, I didn’t do nothing to Nas.’ But it was when I just signed to Roc-A-Fella and I was like, ‘Damn, man. Do we ignore Nas or do we respond to Nas?'”

He continued, stating that he and his crewmates had no choice but to defend their honor given the vulnerable circumstance they were in regarding their lack of sustained success at that time.

“We had to do that, ’cause I’m like, ‘Damn, we just getting in the door after a f**ked up deal I had at Sony, our backs were against the wall.’ I would never diss Nas for no reason,” he continued. “That’s why I did it.”

Cam’ron and Nas would also settle their differences, brokering peace with one another back in 2014.
